A New Beginning
We are a long-standing academy of evangelical scientists and ethicists that recently have formally organized into the Academy of Evangelical Scientists and Ethicists, with about 70 scientists and ethicists as Fellows. At this point we have filed our Articles of Incorporation, have adopted a set of Bylaws. In a letter from the IRS dated October 5, 2006, we were informed that our application for tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) was granted by the Internal Revenue Service. Contributions to the Academy are deductible under section 170 of the Code. We are also qualified to received tax deductible bequests, devices, transfers or gifts under section 2055, 2106 or 2522 of the Code. We were further judged to be classified as a public charity under those codes. The Effective Date of Exemption: is given by the IRS as June 9, 2005. Our Advance Ruling Ending Date is December 31, 2009.
The Fellows of this Academy are professional scientists and ethicists who are dedicated to responsible Christian environmental stewardship. Over the past years and decades we have worked as a growing academy (small letter "a") of colleagues in our research and development toward a scientific and biblical foundation for stewardship and have been applying this in various ways in colleges and universities, seminaries, institutes, organizations, homes, communities, and in environmental policies and practices. This academy has now become formally organized into the Academy of Evangelical Scientists and Ethicists. This better serves to identify us as scientists and ethicists as a formal entity in the evangelical world and beyond, and helps identify the Academy as a credible, responsible, and substantial scientific and ethical source for knowledge and understanding of Christian environmental stewardship, faithful earthkeeping, and devoted care for God's Creation. This formalization not only recognizes a maturing of our long-standing academy and the body of knowledge and understanding it has gained through our research, various assemblies, and publications, but also serves better to identify us as an Academy at a time when evangelical scientists and ethicists have become more visible and more relied upon for advice, counsel, and support on Christian environmental stewardship.
The Fellows of the Academy are so designated and given honorific membership in the Academy based upon their qualifications, professional status, expertise, and positive contributions to Christian environmental stewardship. Professional scientists and ethicists become Fellows only through nomination by the Fellows of the Academy. Every Fellow also has the highest academic degree in their field of scholarship and research. Fellows of the Academy, as evangelicals, scientists, ethicists, and responsible stewards have a faith commitment to protect and care for the totality of God’s Creation. Fellows personify an understanding of the richness, depth, and beauty in Creation that goes well beyond any ones abilities to express it and also personify an understanding of the inexpressible richness, depth, and beauty in Christ’s work—from the foundations of Creation on. Fellows are so rooted in this richness that they have come to be God’s stewards with love, devotion, and dedication.
